New Tax to Possibly Affect Hookah

A new tax is before Congress to raise tax on ‘pipe tobacco.’  Bill H.R. 4439 would increase taxes 775% on said tobacco.  The price would go from $2.8311 per pound to $24.78 per pound!  This tax increase seems to be a response to some companies that relabled themselves as pipe tobacco to avoid earlier tax raises.  However, the tax increase will affect much more.

Hookah stands a chance to have its prices increased as well.  If the tax was passed, average prices per quantity would be something like:

$2.74 per 50g

$5.48 per 100g

$13.68 per 250g

$27.36 per 500g

$54.72 per 1000g

There isn’t a lot of information available at the moment, but any updates will be followed up.  This seems to be the case of someone runing it for everybody else.  While I do think they deserve to be punished, I hardly find 775% a reasonable number.

This graph shows the tax increases over the years on tobacco, and how they continue to climb.

Send an email to government members and protest the tax hike.  Also, Fox News has some more information on the previous tax raises as well.
